Ethics Essay The thesis of this paper is to review the Week Two Discussion Questions and address individual responsibility within their community. I will write about ways that people can give back to their community. I will also be describing an event I took part in done within my community to be a part of it. Lastly, I will address the â€Å"free rides† that are within all communities and what to do about them. while incorporating the materials covered in both Week One and Week Two of the Course. Responsibility within the Community No matter who you are or where you live, we are all part of a bigger community. As an individual, we are still part of a family be it big or small. Chapter 2 of Basic Ethics goes on to explain that by being involved in community activities, everyone involved will see a a significant advantage to living in the community. Individual Socially Responsible Efforts Within the last year, I participated in a community park clean-up event where volunteers went and repaired playground equipment, removed overgrown brush from trails and picked up trash. This greatly improved our community’s appearance to all driving by and gives the community a sense of pride. Community Benefits When addressing the potential results if members of a community accepting their community’s benefits, but decline to contribute to the community other than paying taxes, you think of additional cost. For every dollar spent trying to evict the â€Å"free riders† from the community, a dollar is taken away from another program and someone else suffers a loss of benefit. With that in mind, there must come a time when the â€Å"free riders† must be addressed and normally the set standard of tolerance is 5 to 10 percent. When over 5 to 10 percent of the population become â€Å"free riders†, they must be addressed because at this point, all programs suffer loss of funding. Therefore, it can be said that implementing teamwork in the workplace can be tricky and difficult. The Tuckmans stages of group development, is effective in highlighting the challenges faced by the managers of the organisation whole implementing teamwork in the organisation. the main problems faced by the company while establishing teamwork in the organisation are to decode on whether the team members of the organisation are effective enough in working together with each other towards one particular goal. The presence of highly competitive staff within the workplace creates problem in the process of teamwork establishment. Theoretical concepts on the support of the view There are many theories on teamwork that helps to support the fact that establishing teamwork in an organisation is a difficult process. The relevant theories on teamwork that is effective to study the topic are Tuckmans theory, Star model theory, Agent theory and Human-agent teamwork theory. Tuckmans theory: According to the Tuckmans theory, there are four phases in the theory namely the forming stage, storming stage, norming stage and performing stage. The forming stage of the theory is the initial stage where the employees or the team members are not gelled up together. This stage is a messed up stage as the employees or the members of the team are busy settling and positioning themselves within the team (Weberg and Weberg 2014). Therefore, this stage needs to be handled carefully by the managers, as there is a high chance for the failure of teamwork in this very first stage. The next stage in the storming stage in which the individuals starts considering themselves as a part of the team. However in the opinion of Besner and Hobbs (2013), the managers of the organization faces difficulties in this stage as the team member constantly challenges each other that reduces the effectiveness of teamwork. A difference is created that results from the confrontation and conflicts between the employees and the members of the team. The team therefore, loses its performance level or diverts from the focused task. Norming stage is followed by the storming stage where there is a presence of positivity. In this phase, the team members starts working as a team together, develop processes, sets rules and criteria for working, and clarifies the task that are to be done. There is an increased sense of togetherness that is essential for organisational effectiveness. The performing swage is the final stage, which is observed with increased focus on the activities and the relationship between the team members. The enhanced teamwork is beneficial in creating a performing team while the characteristics of effective teamwork are useful for the team to maintain the level of performance (West 2012). The four stages of the Tuckmans strategy in teamwork is effective in supporting the topic as the managers faces difficulty in managing the team in the preliminary stage of the theory (Valentine, Nembhard and Edmondson 2015). However, if the managers implements strategies and proper techniques to implement the leadership, the organisation will be able to achieve the expected outcome of leadership. Star team model: The star team model is am effective model that helps the team members to determine the factors on which they need to focus. As mentioned by Kirk et al. (2012), good teamwork is all about providing the condition and environment that help the members to members to enhance their skills, ideas and knowledge. the theory suggest that focusing on the strengths of the team members at the time of pursuing the goals is an effective way to achieve organisational effectiveness. The model infers that the effective teamwork can be achieved when the team members uses and develop their strengths to flourish. However, it is a difficult task as the managers of the team are not always able to identify the strengths of the team members. It becomes complicated when the managers of the organisation tries to implement the Star model as it is not always possible to effectively align teamwork with the strengths of the employees and thus the expected outcome is not achieved (Hibbert and Cunliffe 2015). Agent teamwork theory: The agent teamwork theory characterises certain features in teamwork. First, the goals that are to achieved is needed to be shared by the agents. Secondly, the intention of carrying out the pan also needs to shared and sis cussed. Third, the team members need to be fully aware of their individual capabilities and the ways in which they perform the assigned roles in order to be successful in achieving the organisational goals (Chuang, Jackson and Jiang 2016). However, Paull et al. (2013) argued that the theory fails to resolve the problems of agency problems. The team leaders fail to cherish the fruitful results of effective teamwork, as the agency theory is unable to provide satisfaction to the team members, as their individual problems are not focussed on. Therefore, it again becomes difficult for the organisation to establish an effective teamwork within the workplace. Human-agent teamwork theory: According to Drew and Coulsonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Thomas (2013), when a work is performed by a group of individuals where each of them carries out their subordinating personal functions and adds towards achieving one particular goal, the result is effective. When teamwork is performed, the goals can be achieved in a flexible and robustable manner in a distributed, dynamic and hostile environment. However, the managers of the organisation face the biggest challenge in developing a mixed initiative of human organisation. One of the limiting factors of the theory is that the interaction between the ability of the users and their willingness to spend the time in communicating with the other agent is not well understood (Goetsch and Davis 2014). There occur problems related to management uncertainties and focusing on the task while trying to incorporate teamwork within the organisation. Teamwork further increases the uncertainty about the agent plans and the status (Rasula, Vuksic and Stemberge r 2012). The failure of effective teamwork elongates the process of achieving the organisational goal, as the team members are unable to coordinate the work among them effectively. Examples to validate the view In order to support the view that it is difficult to establish teamwork within the organisation, relevant examples are discussed. In the modern era, the organisations especially in US, spends almost $14 billion every year on the leadership and teamwork development. In the context of the European retail bank, the organisation was anxious to increase its sales. For the company, in the short-run, the skill that was the major concern was to persuade and motivate the team members without any formal authority of the direct line management (TungBaird and Schoch 2014). It was critical for the managers to persuade the team members to work in a coordinate manner and change the working approaches that restricted the organisation from achieving the organisational goals (Bratton and Gold 2012). This implies that establishing teamwork in an organisation is a difficult task and failure to make appropriate decisions regarding teamwork decreases the productivity of the team members resulting in failu re of teamwork. In the example of Microsoft Company, the company sets a new mission to create real teamwork and just not mere teams. The managers of the company witnessed fall in the productivity due to less effective teamwork. There was absence of team identity, as members did not feel mutually accountable with each other. They were not able to make decisions and faced problems in tomes of critical decision-making. In order to resolve the issues faced by the company, the CEO of the company decides to makes changes in the organisational activities in order to increase the effectiveness of the teamwork (Tabassi, Ramli and Bakar 2012). The managers intended to identify the strength of the team in order to make the individuals responsible of the task that they are capable of carrying out. Conclusion The theories and the examples studied in the project helps to conclude that the process of establishing teamwork in an organisation is a difficult and critical activity. The theories on teamwork such as Tuckmans theory, Star team model, Agent theory of teamwork and the Human-agent theory of teamwork provide wide knowledge on the concept of teamwork. These models are further beneficial in supporting the view that achieving effective teamwork is a difficult process. There are various factors that a team leader needs to focus on order to establish teamwork in the workplace. However, it is not always possible for the leaders to focus on each factor before implementing teamwork in the firm. Moreover, based on the example of the European retail bank it can be stated that there are many other organisations that fails to establish effective teamwork due to the complexity of the process. Therefore, it is important for the organisations to hire staffs that have the capabilities of working as t eam and have the required skills. The managers of the company also need to corporate with the team members in order to provide them the best ambience to work effectively as a team. It can be therefore stated that to establish effective teamwork within the organisation the managers needs to develop and implement strategies for teamwork. On a trip to the bathroom, I saw one guy making a fool of himself trying to get together with this girl. Ten minutes later, that same person walked into my room and sat down on my chair. He then told me to get out of his room. A friend of mine had a similar experience. A drunken resident stumbled into his room and fell down on his bed, saying, â€Å"I think I’ll crash here tonight. † Luckily, he got up and decided to leave before my friend beat the alcohol out of him. Upon reaching the door, it took him a good 10 seconds before he realized that the knob was on the other side. While I realize that college students generally don’t have it easy and they need to unwind every now and then, large consumption of alcohol simply isn’t the answer. I suppose it’s OK to go out and have a drink every now and then, but many people take that to an extreme. Plain and simple, the statistics disfavor drinking on campus. Perhaps the most stunning statistic is the fact that fourteen-hundred college students between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four die each year from unintentional, alcohol-related injuries, the majority of which includes car crashes. That’s not surprising when coupled with the fact that 2. 1 million students drove under the influence last year. Approximately twenty-five percent of college students accredit low academic performance to alcohol and thirty-one percent of students met criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse. Another huge impact of alcohol is sexual abuse. In excess of seventy-thousand students fell victim to alcohol-related rape and sexual assault. Four hundred thousand students had unprotected sex and twenty five percent of them say they were too drunk to even remember if they consented to it. Property damage is another plague brought unto colleges by alcohol abuse, especially here at Stevens, where several card-readers that allow access to residence halls were destroyed on several occasions. Around eleven percent of student drinkers say they have committed vandalism of property while drunk. Many administrators also report that their campuses have an increasing problem with alcohol-related property damage. Alcohol inevitably leads to health problems. More than one hundred and fifty thousand students develop alcohol-related health problems and almost 1. 5% of these students have attempted suicide. Five percent of college students are involved with the police for alcohol-related issues and an estimated one hundred and ten thousand students have been arrested as a result of their drinking. In conclusion, although I recognize the pro- side to this debatable issue, I think that the consequences of drinking far outweigh the pleasures. Drinking should not be allowed on college campuses.

I wish I had balls like her.† â€Å"Where is she now?† Jody asked. â€Å"She's having a Mochaccino at Tulley's on Market. I loaned her like twenty dollars. Which she's going to pay me back out of her Christmas bonus you're giving her. Hey, do I get a Christmas bonus, because – â€Å" â€Å"Call her and tell her to stay right where she is,† Jody said. â€Å"We're on our way.† â€Å"We are?† Tommy said. Despite the novelty of it, when novelty had just become his new joy, he figured that if he went another eight hundred years before it happened again, he'd be okay. Creeping down a SOMA alley, snatching rats from behind Dumpsters and draining them to dust just so he could heal himself enough to hunt a real victim, was serving as an abject lesson as to why he and his kind were sworn to remain concealed. It was bound to happen: the application of new technology for the detection and destruction of vampires. Hadn't he adopted technology to protect himself? His self-piloting yacht with its sensors and sealed vault had served him as well as any guarded castle. But he'd forgotten the rule – not forgotten, really, but ignored it – deciding to indulge in hope, to the point of faith, that he would always prevail. So some clever cow had figured out how to package sunlight and unleash it upon his arrogant carcass. The cow would never have found the solution had the vampire not shown him the problem. Humbled was Elijah, and angry, and hungry, and a little sad, because he had loved his yellow tracksuit, and now it was but beads of blackened pol yester burned into his skin. He picked at them as he listened for prey, tucked between a Dumpster and a white step-van full of bread racks. Here came one now – fat enough to complete the healing, Elijah could tell by the weight of his step. The back door of the bakery opened and the rotund baker stepped out and shook a cigarette out of his pack. His life aura was pink and healthy, his heart thumped strong, and would for a long time if Elijah did not suck it dry. Normally he only took the sick and the weak, those who were short for the grave anyway, but this was a desperate time. He leapt on the big man's back and rode him to the ground, catching his scream in one hand, using the other to hit pressure points in his neck that had the baker unconscious in two seconds. Elijah drank, listening to his blackened skin crackle, slough, and heal, even as the baker still breathed. There would be no neck snap, no body to find this time. He dumped the dust from the baker's clothes and slipped into them. His white Nikes were the only survivors of his previous outfit, so he threw the baker's clogs into the Dumpster along with his wallet, pocketed the cash, and took off, dressed in white from head to foot. The vampire smiled to himself, not with joy, but with the grim irony of the situation. People often speak of things coming to them in a flash of inspiration, but the clich held new meaning for Elijah. The flash meant that the game was over, that his foray into human desire, even for revenge, had gone far enough, and now it was time for damage control. They all had to die. He wouldn't enjoy killing her. Not her. After being burned up for the second time in two days, Blue was ready for a healing massacre – a bloodbath – but the Animals had stopped her, citing sissy ethical reasons like murder was, you know, wrong. â€Å"You're burned up!† Blue said. â€Å"This is no time to develop a conscience. Where was your conscience when you were making me do you a dozen times a day, huh?† â€Å"That's different,† said Drew. â€Å"You were in on it.† â€Å"Yeah,† added Jeff. â€Å"And we paid you.† â€Å"No one was hurt, amiga,† Gustavo added. Blue broke off some charred crust coming over the seat of the Mercedes at Gustavo, who was in the passenger seat. Drew dragged her back into her seat by her hips. He called three more times in the next half hour, played two rounds of Gunning for Nuns Xtreme on Jared's Xbox, called Abby's cell only to get voice mail, then made his first sincere attempt at turning to mist. He looked for paint peeling off the walls. That was it. He was not a kid hiding in his friend's basement, he was a – what did Abby call it? – he was one of the anointed, a prince of the night. He was going to walk out of here, right past the family, and if he had to take them out, well, so be it. That would teach Jody for leaving him behind and turning her phone off. He ran through the kitchen and out the door, then stood with his back against the minivan in the drive, trying to catch his breath. â€Å"That was fucked up,† he gasped, then realized that he wasn't out of breath from exertion at all. He was having an anxiety attack. â€Å"That was really, really fucked up.† Chapter Twenty-eight Wallflowers of the Night It was a lot like trying to get your courage up to ask a girl to dance, except that in this case it wasn't so much the fear of rejection, or that you'd be awkward and embarrass yourself, although that was a consideration, but that whoever you picked was going to be reduced to dust, which was somewhat more significant than trampling her toes. Tommy stood on Castro Street looking for his next victim. His first victim, really. He was tired of being the apprentice. If Jody was going to just leave him in the basement because he wasn't vampire enough for her, then maybe he'd have to become like her. Maybe he'd learn about this predator nature she talked about. Maybe, like that guy in the basement in The Phantom of the Opera, he would have to hear â€Å"The Music of the Night.† He wasn't sure what had happened to the basement guy. He'd gone to see the movie with a girl from his high school, but had to leave halfway through to keep from taking his own life. It hadn't been a good date. There were plenty of people out on the street, even at this hour, but none of them screamed victim. There were no women in low-cut dresses who had just turned an ankle. There were no girls in negligees running down the street, glancing back over their shoulders. There were, in fact, not many girls at all. Lots of guys. Lots. He reckoned that it wasn't really necessary that he pick a woman. After all, he'd fed off of William and Chet, both of whom were male, but this was different. This was really becoming the hunter, and despite his hunger, there was no little bit of revenge in his decision to bite someone. So it had to be a girl. He had to get back at Jody for ditching him at Jared's. He had to show her that she wasn't the only vein in the circulatory system. Or whatever. The few women he saw were so healthy, with big bright pink life auras around them, and weren't alone either. He had to get someone alone. Frustrated, he backed down the alley and started pacing back and forth. After a short time he took a run at the wall, ran up ten feet or so, then turned and ran back across the alley and up the other wall about ten feet, then back, and up the wall fifteen feet – like a skateboarder working a half-pipe, he ran back and forth, feeling the strength and speed of what he was – feeling his confidence rise. I am a superior being, he thought. I am a friggin' god! Then his foot went through a window and he sank up to his crotch into the building, then dangled over the alley upside down, three stories up, flailing. Stupid place for a window, he thought. Then he saw her. She was sort of tall, but dressed in a red evening gown, with athletic curves, and long red hair that had been lacquered into ringlets. She was perfect, and she was coming down the alley. It was like he'd ordered her from an old Hammer film to be the hapless victim. Sweet! So he was hanging upside down by one leg. That could be a tactic. He felt his fangs extending and he drooled a little, which hit her on the shoulder. She started a little, and that's when he made his move. He'd always loved the scene in Dracula where Jonathan Harker sees the Count climbing, facedown, down the castle walls and thinks, Hey, something is up here. Tommy had pleaded with Jody to try it, but she never would, so this was his chance. He pulled himself out of the window, hooked his fingers between the bricks, and began his climb. And dropped thirty feet to the alley, landing flat on his back. â€Å"Ouch.† Upon Tommy's impact, his intended victim had let out a very masculine scream, jumped three feet straight up, and came down sideways on her high heels. She knelt over him rubbing her ankle. â€Å"Cheesy Christ on a cracker, darlin'. Where did you come from?† Southern, and deep. â€Å"Slipped,† Tommy said. â€Å"You're a man, huh?† â€Å"Well, let's say that is a street which I have walked, to which I do not wish to return.† â€Å"You're very pretty,† Tommy said. â€Å"Sweet of you to say.† He tossed his hair a bit. â€Å"You want I should call an ambulance?† â€Å"No, no. Thanks. Gustavo had gone for a zebra, under the mistaken assumption that his experience with horses as a boy in Mexico would somehow give him an edge in handling the African equine. Consequently, he had been summarily stomped, and now had several broken bones, including a nasty compound fracture of one leg, in addition to being burned up. Jeff, the basketball failure, was still embarrassed about having been taken down by a girl, and so picked a jungle cat as his victim, thinking that he would take on the strength and speed of his donor. His right arm was attached only by a few muscles and much of that shoulder was gone altogether. His skin was still crusty black from the waist up. â€Å"Fuck knocking,† said Blue. The big front window had only that day been replaced, but she was going to lead her charge right through it. â€Å"Get in, find them, and take them.† She found she was falling back on her dominatrix experience a lot lately, which was not a skill in which she had complete confidence, having only recently been killed while performing it. She took three quick steps up, snatched up the steel-reinforced trash can that Jody had used on the window only days ago, and flung it underhanded with all her strength. The can rocketed through the air, bounced off the new, double-impact-resistant Plexiglas window, and knocked Blue on her ass. Projects undertaken by the Mexican government in conjunction with multinational corporations have transformed some of the areas inhabited b y the indigenous people. In 2009, wind-power projects were started in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. These projects not only provided power to the local people, but also provided employment (Giddens, 1991). Other economic activities come as a result of outside influence on the local economy. Tourism, for instance, stems out of foreigners coming into Mexico. The locals can benefit from selling their indigenous wares and arts. Tourism is one way of promoting globalization, as there is increase contact among different cultures, there is exchange of ideologies, knowledge and resources. The local people enjoy increased income and their lifestyles are changed significantly. As a way to attract more tourists, the Mexican government seeks to develop facilities in the indigenous areas to the appeal of the visitors. The transportation, communication and accommodation facilities are improved. These benefits trickle down to the locals. On the other hand, as tourism promotes globalization, there are concerns as to what extent these changes affect the local people.
